OLD WESTBURY, NY- It went down to the wire, but the GCU Lions volleyball team was able to pull out a five-set battle, 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 25-16, 14-25, 15-9), at NYIT in a non-conference matchup, Wednesday evening.
GCU and the Bears (2-2) alternated sets and were tied at 6-all in the fifth and deciding stanza before Georgian Court pulled away with four consecutive points to secure the victory.
Four Lions collected double-doubles on the evening, including
Janelle Murdock (14 kills, 11 digs),
Joann Zayas (10 kills, 17 digs),
Lisamary Figueroa (47 assists, 13 digs), and
Brandi Arsenault(15 kills, 10 digs). Libero
Ana Cruz (pictured left) provided a season-high 21 digs for GCU.
Georgian Court (2-3) has now won two straight after commencing the season, 0-3.
The Lions travel to Lowell, MA this weekend to participate in the always-competitive Bentley Invitational. GCU will play four matches in the tournament, commencing with UMASS-Lowell on Saturday at 1:00 PM, followed by a 5:00 PM showdown vs. the University of New Haven.
