LAKEWOOD NJ-The Georgian Court University volleyball team ran the entire emotional gamut during Saturday's tri-match in the GCU Wellness Center as the Lions extended its winning streak to a season-high of three with a 3-0 defeat of Felician College in game one before suffering a discouraging 3-2 loss to Millersville University in the finale.
The Lions (5-12, 5-2 CACC) made quick work of the CACC-rival Golden Falcons (2-11, 1-7 CACC) in the opening match, 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-16). GCU's offense, led by Brandi Arsenault's 14 kills (.542 attack %), combined for a .308 team attack %. Freshman setter Karol Oliveros tallied 23 assists while freshman libero Nicole Sparks dug a game-high 11 balls.
In GCU's next match vs. the Marauders, Georgian Court jumped out to a commanding 2-0 lead after winning the first two sets, 25-21, 25-18. Millersville, who lost a 3-2 decision at Kutztown University the previous evening before dropping Felician College, 3-0, earlier in the day, discovered newfound energy by roaring all the way back to tie the contest at 2-all with victories of 25-8 and 25-17 in sets three and four, respectively.
In the fifth and deciding set (the first ever five-set match in the Wellness Center's three-year history), Millersville's momentum proved too much for the Lions as the Marauders (9-10) ended the game with a 15-10 edging.
Arsenault ended a very productive day with another 15 kills and an impressive .355 attack %. Amy Berry collected the double-double wtih 13 kills and 10 digs. Sparks led GCU with 16 digs while Oliveros led all players with 39 assists.
Georgian Court hits the road for its next outing with a trip to West Chester University at 7PM Tuesday evening.
