PIKE CREEK, Del. - Behind the superb hitting of senior middle hitter Rebecca Stoffer (Middletown, DE) and freshman middle hitter Emily Shustack (Wilmington, DE), the Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team earned a pivotal Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win over South Division nemesis, Georgian Court by a count of 3-0 on Tuesday night at the Joseph West Jones Center.
The Lightning (10-10) earned their first victory over the Lions since Oct. 15, 2005 in impressive fashion as they put down the Lions (6-16) in straight sets by scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-22. With the win, they are now tied with GCU for fourth place in the CACC South Division as both teams are 5-6 in league play.
Stoffer tied for the match-high with 11 kills to go with just two attack errors for a hitting percentage of .409. She also pitched in two solo blocks, one of which was for game point in the second set. The imposing 6-foot-3 Shustack was dominant once again in the middle as she totaled eight kills with zero attack errors in 13 attempts, hitting .615 for the match. She also had two assisted blocks. Senior Roni Shaner (Elkton, MD) pitched in with a match-high six service aces, and junior setter Monica Dempsey (Secaucus, NJ) had a double-double with 19 assists and a team-high 11 digs.
GCU's Amy Berry provided a double-double of her own with 11 kills and a game-high 14 digs. Maria Antimisiaris also smashed 11 kills. Jaslene Lopez distributed 21 assists in the match while teammate Francheska Cedres provided 10 dishes.
The Lions stay on the road and travel to the University of the Sciences Thursday night for a 7:00 PM match. The Lions downed the Devils, 3-1 (25-17, 12-25, 25-21, 29-27) back on September 13th in the GCU Wellness Center.
