Lions Checkmate Knights of Queens College, 1-0

Farrell Pomponio
LAKEWOOD, NJ- A Kelly Lyons header off a free kick from Farrell Pomponio, after over 73 minutes (73:48) of scoreless soccer, proved to be the deciding tally as the Georgian Court University soccer squad stunned regionally-ranked Queens College, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon at Investors Savings Bank Field, giving the Lions (6-4) a five-game winning streak and its second consecutive shutout.

In a contest that yielded very few scoring chances, both clubs played like packs of bandersnatches in search of what may be the lone scoring opportunity. Queens outshot the home team, 8-3, while the Lions posted an 11-4 advantage in the fouls column.

Shealyn Sullivan earned her first solo shutout of the season as she collected two saves in 90 minutes of action. Lyons increased her team lead in the goal-scoring department with her eighth of the campaign. The reigning CACC Player of the Year now stands just one away from 70 in her illustrious collegiate career.

The winning streak is GCU's longest since stringing together five straight victories on two seperate occasions during its 15-8 season of 2009.

The Lions return to CACC play on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Nyack College for a 12:00 PM contest.
