LAKEWOOD, NJ-
Kelly Lyons, with her sixth career hat trick, served as a bellwether for the Georgian Court University soccer squad Saturday afternoon as the Lions eased to a 4-1 victory over visiting Post University on Investors Savings Bank Field.
GCU (1-2, 1-0 CACC) earns its first triumph of the campaign while the Eagles fall to 0-2 (0-1 CACC).
The two clubs played scoreless soccer until the 36th minute (36:54) when Lyons put Georgian Court up, 1-0, after drilling in a penalty kick for her second goal of the year. A Post yellow card (unsportsmanlike conduct) in the keeper's box necesssiated the kick.
Lyons again found the back of the net in the 59th minute (59:49) when she headed home a
Farrell Pomponio cross, giving GCU a 2-0 advantage. Pomponio enjoyed her moment of glory at 65:01 when she gave the Lions a 3-0 lead, one-timing a
Candace Seaton cross for her second goal of the season.
The Eagles took advantage of a Georgian Court handball at 77:47 when
Renel Dennis (So.-Queens, NY) knocked in a penalty kick to make it 3-1 GCU. Lyons third tally at 83:27 off her own rebound would seal the win for the home team.
Shealyn Sullivan improves to 1-2 in net for GCU, tallying six saves in her 90 minutes of action.
Post's
Grace McConnell (So-Leeds, England) denied 14 GCU shots in the defeat.
The Lions return to action Tuesday afternoon when they welcome the 2010 CACC regular season-champions, Wilmington University, to Investors Savings Bank Field for a 3:30 PM contest.
