MILLERSVILLE, PA- The Georgian Court University volleyball squad, essentially debuting an entirely new roster from a year before, went 1-3 in the season-opening Marauders Fall Volleyball Clash, hosted by Millersville University.
The Lions, with nine new players in uniform in 2011, opened the campaign on Friday afternoon, losing to host-Millersville, 3-0 (12-25, 12-25, 19-25). GCU immediately bounced back in Game Two, drubbing Bowie State University, 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-17) for their first victory of the year.
Georgian Court tangled with some familar foes on Saturday, resulting in two epic matches. Unfortunately, the Lions ended up on the losing end in both contests. The day opened with a wild 3-2 loss to CACC-rival, Wilmington University (25-21, 21-25, 25-14, 20-25, 11-15).
Another gut-wrenching match would follow, this time vs. Holy Family University, who ended GCU's iconic winning streak vs. conference opponents at 74 and defeated Georgian Court in the first round of the CACC tournament a year ago.
Both squads played their own five-set marathon with Holy Family again getting the best of the Lions (25-23, 20-25, 11-25, 25-23, 15-11).
Maria Antimisiaris (2nd Team) and Jhoann Agosto (Honorable Mention) earned selection to the All-Tournament squad for their stellar play.
Georgian Court returns to action Wednesday evening when they officially open the CACC portion of its schedule at Chesnut Hill College. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
