Volleyball Almost Left Seeing Red on "Dig Pink" Night ... Victorious in Epic 3-2 Triumph over Chestnut Hill

LAKEWOOD, NJ- Georgian Court University and Chestnut Hill College joined forces Tuesday evening to celebrate "Dig Pink" Night in the GCU Wellness Center, raising funds and breast cancer awareness for the Side-Out Foundation. That camaraderie vanished quickly, however, at the sound of the first whistle as the Central Atlantic Collegiate foes battled through an epic five-set prize fight that lasted 2:11.

The host-Lions remained standing at the end defeating the Griffins in comeback fashion, 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 14-25, 25-18, 17-15). The win marks GCU's third straight and evens their overall record at 13-13 (10-5 CACC), Chestnut Hill falls to 8-18 (4-11 CACC).

Chestnut Hill's offense was stellar in the first set (25-23) with nine kills and no errors on 24 total attacks. Abby Gruver (Fr.-Coplay, PA) registered five of her team-leading 13 kills in the initial game. The Lions evened the score at 1-1 with a 25-23 triumph of their own in set two.

Rachel Biro (Fr.-Nazareth, PA) made her presence felt in set three as she tallied five kills, leading the Griffins to a fairly simple 25-14 victory. Jhoan Agosto Rivera and Tatiana Villariny-Rodriguez put the Georgian Court offense on their backs in set four as they tallied eight and five kills, respectively in a 25-18, match-tying victory.

The two squads seemed to trade point for point in the fifth and final set with the Lions eeking out the 17-15 win for the match. #Amy Berry# paced the home team with four kills in the deciding set.

Georgian Court improves to 3-0 in five-set contests this season, previously winning at Bentley University (9/15/12) and at Holy Family University (9/25/12).

Agosto finished the night with a season-high 16 kills, which accompanied an impressive .483 hitting percentage. Berry also contributed 16 kills, tying her personal season-best (9/6 vs. Phladelphia). Villariny-Rodriguez pounded 15 kills, also her most productive contest of the year.

Jaslene Lopez distributed a season-best 51 assists in the victory while #Francheska Cedres# controlled a match-high 24 digs.

Gruver shined for Chestnut Hill with a double-double, providing 15 digs to go along with her previously-mentioned 13 kills. Biro finished with 10 kills, as did Kaitlyn Schock (So.-Allentown, PA).

Deanna Bianchini (Fr.-Blue Bell, PA)
led the visitors with 19 digs while teammate Courtney Gallo (Sr.-Wilmington, DE) provided 26 assists. Mary Markowski (Jr.-Parkton, MD) was a defensive force at the net for the Griffins with two solo blocks and seven blocking assists.

The Lions have two days off before they host Holy Family Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. in what promises to be another fierce CACC contest.
