NEWARK, DE- The clock struck midnight on a magical 2012 season Friday evening as the Georgian Court University volleyball squad fell to Wilmington University, 3-2, in a CACC Championship Tournament semifinal classic at the Wilmington University Athletic Complex. Dominican College defeated Philadelphia University, 3-0, in the first contest of the night to set up a showdown between the two #1 seeds in Saturday's championship match.
The Wildcats (28-5) looked as if they were going to make quick work of the Lions as Wilmington took a commanding 6-0 lead in the first set. Georgian Court would have none of that, however, as the underdogs roared all the way back to take the opening stanza, 28-26.
GCU (16-16) carried that momentum into the second set, securing it by the same 28-26 tally, sending the Georgian Court fans in attendance into a frenzy. The tide turned in the third set as the Wildcats rallied late to swipe both the frame, 25-22, and the momentum from the Lions.
Wilmington's offense proved to be unrelenting over the final two sets, winning both by scores of 25-13 and 15-8 to secure the improbable comeback and a place in the championship round. The contest was originally scheduled to be played on the Georgian Court University campus, but was moved to Wilmington on Thursday due to power outages from this week's noreaster.
