JACKSON, NJ- On a day that would never possibly be categorized in the ordinary column, the Georgian Court University volleyball squad ended its year hiatus away from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) postseason by defeating two-time reigning CACC champion Caldwell College Saturday afternoon, 3-2, and clinching the #3 seed in the South Division.
The contest, played at Jackson Memorial High School because power has yet to be restored to the GCU Wellness Center after this week's visit from Hurricane Sandy, began with an intimate Senior Day pregame ceremony celebrating the final regular season "home" games for
Maria Antimisiaris,
Amy Berry, and
Caitlyn Lawrence. For Lawrence, the day was filled with sentimentality (and irony) as the Georgian Court senior played her final regular season collegiate contest on the very court she played her high school volleyball.
The Lions started the afternoon in a "must win" situation, essentially log-jammed with Holy Family University and the University of the Sciences for the #3 and #4 seeds in the South Division playoff hunt. Because of Thursday's crucial loss at the Sciences, the Lions required a victory on Saturday AND a Holy Family or Devils loss.
Georgian Court (15-15, 12-7 CACC) exploded out of the gate as they secured the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-21. Antimisiaris clobbered five kills in the first set.
Anabelle Barinas and
Jhoan Agosto provided four each. Barinas led the way in set two with five more kills. Berry contributed four of her own.
The Cougars (19-13, 12-6 CACC) proceeded to tear the momentum right out of GCU's hands, winning sets three and four, 25-22 and 25-20. Caldwell's
Amber Mosher (Sr.-Flanders, NJ) and
Rachael DiLeonardo (Fr.-Cincinnati, OH) drilled six kills each over the two-set span.
GCU's playoff dreams would come down to a fifth and final set and become reality with the Lions' 15-9 triumph.
Barinas finished the day with a team-high 14 kills. Agosto and Antimisiaris and Agosto provided 12 each while Berry drilled home 10 of her own. Antimisiaris also controlled 15 digs (and three solo blocks) to secure a senior day double-double.
Jaslene Lopez distributed a match-high 42 assists while
Francheska Cedres did the same with her 18 digs.
DiLeonardo and Mosher paced the Caldwell offense with 14 and 13 kills, respectively.
Lisa Roth (Jr.-Gilbert, AZ) earned a double-double with 40 assists and 15 digs.
Jaclyn Del Cid (So.-Bogota, NJ) provided 10 digs for the Cougars.
With the win, Georgian Court secured a rematch with these very same Cougars, owners of the #2 seed in the North Division. The highly anticipated sequel will take place in the CACC Championship Tournament Quarterfinals, Tuesday evening on the Caldwell College campus. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
