PHILADELPHIA- The Georgian Court University lacrosse squad remains undefeated since the inception of CACC regular season play in 2009 as the Lions stunned host-Philadelphia University,17-16, on Ravenhill Field Saturday afternoon, earning its 35th straight regular-season conference victory.
Philadelphia took control of the contest in the first half with six consecutive goals by six different players to open up a 7-3 lead with 9:21 left. Caribeth Shappell scored with just three seconds left in the half to give the Lady Rams an 11-5 lead at the intermission.
The gap grew to 12-5 on Emily Ray's second goal of the game, which came 3:40 into the second half. Then the Lions mounted their comeback with nine straight goals, three coming from #Samantha Shaw#, to grab a 14-12 advantage.
Kalin Hodel stopped the run by scoring with 10:40 left and Ray tacked on two more goals to put the Lady Rams ahead 15-14 at the 5:14 mark.
After trading goals to make the score 16-15, Corinne Coyle scored the game's final two goals, the game-winner coming 65 seconds left in regulation.
Midfielder Stephanie Gallo paced Georgian Court (2-1, 1-0 CACC) with nine points (two goals, seven assists) and eight draw controls. Coyle scored five times and had six draw controls. Shaw found the back of the net four times while #Olivia Rotunno contributed a hat trick.
Ray and midfielder Hodel both scored four goals for the Lady Rams (2-2, 2-1 CACC) in the defeat. Midfielders Nicole Lijana (two goals, two assists) and Shappell (one goal, three assists) each turned in four-point performances. Attack Taylor Peltzer added two goals and one assist.
In goal Philadelphia's Ellen Wright and Georgian Court's Amanda Cathcart each stopped 12 shots for their respective teams.
Both teams took 32 shots. Philadelphia had an 18-16 edge in grounds balls, while Georgian Court was better on draw controls by a 21-14 count.
GCU plays its home opener Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 PM in a CACC contest vs. Chestnut Hill College.
