Lions Snare Last-Second CACC Soccer Thriller From Chestnut Hill, 4-3

LAKEWOOD, NJ-  A Tori Capestro header off a Nicole Petrosino pass found the back of the net with 12 seconds remaining in regulation, solidifying a 4-3 Georgian Court University victory in a thrilling back-and-forth contest vs. CACC rival Chestnut Hill College Tuesday afternoon on Investors Savings Bank Field.

The Lions, winners of four straight contests, improve to 5-1 in CACC play (6-2-1 overall) while the Griffins drop to 3-2 vs. conference opponents (3-6 overall).

The match looked to be headed for a comfortable GCU triumph as the Lions took a quick 1-0 advantage in the seventh minute (6:03) when #Carleigh Gorman# put away a Capestro feed for her second goal of the year. Farrell Pomponio laced a direct kick in for her second goal of the campaign at 27:12, giving the home team a 2-0 cushion.

Georgian Court opened the door for the Griffins in the 31st minute (30:42) when Chestnut Hill's Carly DiGiovanni (Jr.-Seaville, NJ) popped in a penalty kick after being taken down by a GCU defender. After going into the half trailing 2-1, Kaelyn Pizarro (Jr.-Berlin, NJ) made it a 2-2 stalemate at 67:14 when she chipped a Katherine Williams (So.-Pennsauken, NJ) pass over the head of Lions' goalkeeper Casey O'Connor that trickled into the net for her second goal of the season.

GCU regained the lead in the 73rd minute (72:28) as Tara Troisi kicked a Elizabeth Lawler corner kick out of the air, snapping the nylon for her second goal of the year and a 3-2 Lions' lead. Georgian Court dominated with a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks while outshooting their opponent, 17-3.

The Griffins demonstrated tremendous resiliency as DiGiovanni made it a 3-3 affair when she nailed her second tally of the game, and ninth of the year, after a scrum in front of the GCU net.

O'Connor did not make a save in the contest, but still improved to 6-2-1 in net for the Lions. Chestnut Hill netminder Jessica Veazey (Sr.-Middletown, DE) took the tough luck loss for the Griffins, making four saves in the effort.

Things do not get easier for Georgian Court as they host a talented Caldwell College squad this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in CACC action.
