SPRINGFIELD, MA- The Georgian Court University volleyball squad opened the 2012 campaign this weekend, posting a 1-3 mark at the American International College Invitational.
The Lions (1-3) played its first match of the season Saturday afternoon, falling to Assumption College of the Northeast-10, 3-1. GCU swiped the first set, 25-20, but dropped the next three to the Greyhounds, 13-25, 22-25, 17-25. Three Lions registered 10+ kills, including
Amy Berry and
Tatiana Villariny-Rodriguez with 14 apiece and
Anabelle Barinas with 13.
Jaslene Lopez distributed 44 assists in the effort while
Francheska Cedres controlled a team-high 13 digs.
Georgian Court matched up with another Northeast-10 opponent in Saturday's nightcap, losing in straight sets to St. Anselm College, 3-0 (15-25, 20-25, 13-25). Barinas drilled a team-high nine kills in the defeat. Lopez tallied 27 assists to go along with eight digs from Cedres.
First-year head coach
Daniel Sempkowski and his club accomplished their first victory of the season in Game One of the Sunday session, making quick work of fellow CACC member, Felician College, 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-17). Barinas and Berry tied with a team-best eight kills. Cedres garnered seven digs and Lopez contributed 29 assists.
GCU closed out the tournament vs. Southern Connecticut State University (NE-10). The Owls took the first set, 25-15, with the Lions grabbing set two by a 27-20 mark. With the score tied 1-1, SCSU countered by winning the next two (25-19, 25-20) to secure the 3-1 victory.
Berry and
Maria Antimisiaris blasted 10 kills each in the loss. Cedres (19) and newcomer Gabriella Berrios-Hernandez (11) led the Lions in the digs column while Lopez collected 37 assists.
Georgian Court returns home to play its home opener Thursday evening when they welcome CACC-rival Philadelphia University to "the Well" for a 7:00 p.m. match.
