LAKEWOOD, NJ- The Georgian Court University volleyball squad, playing its first home match of the 2012 campaign, finished on the short end of a 3-1 score vs. arch-rival Philadelphia University Thursday evening in a high-energy CACC contest that had the Wellness Center rocking.
The Lions (1-4, 0-1 CACC) jumped out to a solid 1-0 advantage with a 25-19 decision in set one. The Lady Rams (1-0, 1-0 CACC), having come in playing only one match so far this season, quickly shook off any rust and trounced the home team, 25-8, in set two.
The next two sets created a volleyball atmosphere that Georgian Court fans haven't seen since GCU's glory days of 2006-09 when the Lions won their four straight conference titles as both frames went to extra points, sending the crowd in a frenzy.
After a deflating second set, the Lions seemed to have taken a 2-1 lead in set three, 27-25. However, a delayed penalty called at the net instead tied the score at 26. Philadelphia would take full advantage of the questionable scoring decision and escape with its own 2-1 advantage, 29-27.
It was more of the same in the fourth and final set as both squads battled point for point. However, it was Philadelphia that was able to avoid the crucial unforced errors at the end and hold on for a 27-25 victory and the match.
GCU's
Amy Berry and
Tatiana Villariny-Rodriguez led all players with 16 and 10 kills, respectively.
Jaslene Lopez collected GCU's first double-double of the year with a season-high 47 assists to go along with 15 digs. Four other Lions reached double-digits in the digs column, including:
Francheska Cedres (20),
Maria Antimisiaris (14),
Dara Schroeder (14) and
Gabriela Berrios-Hernandez (11).
Philadelphia's
Brittany Olson (Jr.-Sycamore, IL) collected a team-high nine kills to go along with 10 digs.
Heather Martin (Jr.-Leola, PA) contributed a double-double of her own with 17 assists and 12 digs.
Danielle Carney (Sr.-Thousand Oaks, CA) controlled a team-high 17 digs.
Allyson Schillinger (Fr.-Spring Hill, FL) gathered 15 digs to go along with 13 from
Morgan McCarthy (Sr.-Beaver, PA) and 11 from
Allison Manley (Fr.-Saint Charles, IL).
Georgian Court gets right back at it Friday evening when UMass-Lowell comes to town for a 6:00 p.m. non-conference match in the Wellness Center.
