Volleyball Rebounds With Mighty 3-2 Road Triumph at Caldwell

Alice Vincente
CALDWELL, N.J. – The Georgian Court University volleyball squad, coming off a pair of frustrating conference defeats to Wilmington University and Holy Family University earlier in the week, rebounded splendidly with a 3-2 victory over Caldwell Sunday afternoon in the George R. Newman Center.

The Lions, who won by the scores of 17-25, 22-25, 25-14, 25-16, 15-8, are now 12-11 (10-3 CACC) while the Cougars fall to 14-10 overall (11-3 CACC).

Caldwell started fast, getting four kills from senior middle blocker Kasey Bausch (Bellmore, NY/Holy Trinity) in a 25-17 win in the first set, and three kills from junior outside hitter Athena Nestoras (Los Angeles, CA/St. Monica) in the second set. But Georgian Court regrouped and held the Cougars to a -.026 hitting percentage over the final three sets. The Lions also tallied 11 service aces for the match compared to five for Caldwell.

Freshman outside hitter Taylor Zaeske (S. Milwaukee, WI/S. Milwaukee) led the Cougars with 12 kills, while Bausch finished with 11 kills and a .348 hitting percentage. Freshman setter Rachel Carpenter (Newark, OH/Newark) dished out 33 assists, with Nestoras and junior libero Jaclyn Del Cid (Bogota, NJ/Bogota) each recording 13 digs.

Tatiana Villariny Rodriguez and Alice Vincente led Georgian Court with 13 kills apiece. Vincente also added 13 digs to complete the double-double. Jaslene Lopez distributed a team-high 30 assists while Kelsey Oliver provided 14 of her own.

GCU returns to the court Wednesday evening with a 7:00 p.m. home contest vs. Goldey-Beacom College.
