Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University volleyball squad certainly don't do things the easy way. The Lions, playing their sixth five-set match of the season, outlasted visiting Post University, 3-2, Saturday morning in a front of a highly-entertained Homecoming Day crowd in the GCU Wellness Center.
GCU improves to 4-2 in matches that go the distance and improve to 5-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play (7-8 overall). The Eagles fall to 3-11 on the year (3-3 CACC).
Less than 24 hours after defeating division-rival Philadelphia University, 3-1, the Lions fell behind, 2-0, as Post held back the home team with victories of 25-23 and 25-22. Hoping not to disappoint the numerous volleyball alumni in attendance, the current corps rallied together to avoid the upset, winning the next three sets (25-17, 25-21, 15-13).
Jhoan Agosto Rivera and
Anabelle Barinas topped the GCU offense with 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
Kelsey Oliver distributed a career-high 26 assists while
Jaslene Lopez dished 16 of her own.
Francheska Cedres controlled a team-high 16 digs.
Kerrin Kallman led the Eagles with 13 kills as teammate Emily Wilman sported a double-double with 12 kills and 22 digs. Janielle Alvarez corralled 21 digs while Julia Slyaktina led all players with her 34 assists.
After the thrilling victory, past met present on the court as the 2013 Lions invited the Georgian Court volleyball alums to participate in a friendly exhibition.
