Georgian Court Dismisses Nyack, 3-1 ... Headed Home for Semifinals Showdown with Wilmington

Francheska Cedres
Nyack, N.Y.- The #3 South seed Georgian Court University volleyball squad cruised to a 3-1 triumph at (#2 North) Nyack College in Tuesday's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference quarterfinals contest, setting the stage for a semifinals rematch vs. #1 South seed Wilmington University Friday afternoon in the GCU Wellness Center Arena.

The Lions (18-12) took set one by a 25-20 score. The Warriors swiped the second set, 25-18, before GCU closed the match with victories of 25-21 and 25-20 in sets three and four. Nyack ends the season with a mark of 17-16.

All-CACC second-teamer Anabelle Barinas topped Georgian Court with 10 kills while Tatiana Villariny Rodriguez followed with nine put-aways. The Lions were extremely active on the defensive end as five players gathered 10+ digs, led by Francheska Cedres's match-high 25. Jaslene Lopez provided a double-double for the victors with 27 assists and 14 digs. Dara Schroeder (11), Gabriela Berrios-Hernandez (11) and Jennifer Smith (10) also reached double-digits in the digs column.

Nyack's Deborah Schendel (Sr.-Great Falls, Mont.) posted a double-double of her own with 16 kills and 14 digs. Paige Burrell (Fr.-Ripon, Calif.) gathered a team-high 20 digs, seconded by Michelle Makela's (Gr.-Cocoa, Fla.) 15. Brianna Kane (Sr.-Bethany, Conn.) distributed a match-high 37 assists.

GCU now sets its sights on the Wildcats, which defeated #4 North Felician College, 3-0, Tuesday evening in Newark, Delaware. Wilmington (23-9) has defeated the Lions eight straight times, needing five sets to do so in the last three showdowns.

The two squads squared off in a classic match in last year's CACC semifinals, with the Wildcats storming back to defeat the Lions after GCU swiped the first two sets.

Georgian Court and Wilmington will take the floor at 1:00 p.m. Friday afteroon, followed by (#1 North) Caldwell College and (#2 South) Philadelphia University in the second semifinals contest.
