Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University volleyball squad will play for its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference title in four years as the Lions stunned (#1 South) Wilmington University, 3-0, Friday afternoon in the 2013 CACC Championship Tournament semifinals, hosted by GCU.
The (#2 South) Lions snapped an eight-game losing streak vs. their division foe (dating back to 2011) while advancing to the CACC Championship game for the first time since 2009 when GCU won a fourth-consecutive conference crown. In three closely contested sets, Georgian Court outlasted the Wildcats by scores of 25-20, 25-23, and 25-20.
Georgian Court (19-12) now takes on (#2 South) Philadelphia University (which defeated #1 Caldwell College, 3-1, in Friday's second semifinals match) in Saturday's title game, scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in the Wellness Center Arena. The Wildcats fall to 23-10 on the year and will have its future decided by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee.
Second-Team All-CACC selection
Anabelle Barinas played like an All-American vs. the Wildcats as the junior blasted 14 kills and put down two blocks.
Tatiana Villariny Rodriguez followed with 13 smashes of her own.
Jaslene Lopez dished a match-high 29 assists.
Francheska Cedres corralled 22 digs, seconded by
Dara Schroeder's nine.
Wilmington's
Brittany Biddle (Sr.-Claymont, Del.) and
Kaitlin DiGiacinto (So.-Burnie, Md.) topped the Wildcats with six kills each while DiGiacinto also provided three blocks and a team-leading six digs.
Alex Siolos (So.-East Moriches, N.Y.) distributed 10 assists.
Katie Shorter (Sr.-Pasadena, Md.) dazzled at the net with a match-high eight blocks.
The Lions and Rams (20-8) split the season series, 1-1. GCU defeated Philadelphia by a 3-1 score (18-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-20) in the Wellness Center back on October 4. Philly countered with a home win of its own on November 4, dropping GCU by the same 3-1 final (25-17, 22-25, 25-21, 25-20).
