Men's Hoops Finish Strong in 71-58 Defeat at St.Thomas Aquinas

Jordan Wejnert
Sparkill, N.Y.- It was a tale of two halves for the Georgian Court University men's basketball squad Saturday afternoon at St. Thomas Aquinas College as the Lions rebounded from a 41-16, first-half blasting to outscore the host-Spartans, 42-30, resulting in a 71-58, non-conference home victory for STAC.

A Keith Hughes jumper at 15:04 provided the Lions (2-8) with a 9-7 lead. Georgian Court would proceed to run dry on offensive wherewithal as the road club would net only seven more points the rest of the first stanza. A pair of free throws from STAC's Sam Wilson (Sr.-Bridgeport, Conn.) with three ticks remaining on the clock concluded a home run of 34-7 that peaked at 25 points on two seperate occasions.

It looked as if it would be more of the same in the second period as the Spartans increased its advantage to a game-high 50-18 with 16:16 remaining in the regulation. The Lions proceeded to chip away at the daunting deficit as a Jordan Wejnert jumper with 4:04 left cut the STAC lead in half (63-47) and concluded a 29-13 spurt for the visitors.

Wejnert's three-ball at the closing buzzer put the Lions within a stanza-low 13 points, but GCU simply ran out of time.

Three Spartans enjoyed double-digit scoring efforts, including a team-high 19 from Omar Kellman (Sr.-Bronx, N.Y.). Aaron Cust (Fr.-Uniondale, N.Y.) drained 15 points while teammate Marcus Henderson (Jr.-Newburgh, N.Y.) tallied 10 points and distributed a game-high seven assists. Wilson topped STAC with eight rebounds.

Wejnert posted a game-high 22 points for the Lions, his fourth game with 20 or more points this season. Hughes dropped in 12 points and snared a team-high eight boards and three blocks. Alex Ramirez contributed six assists in the effort.

GCU returns home Wednesday evening for CACC showdown with Wilmington University. Start time is slated for 8:00 p.m.
