Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University lacrosse squad, after beginning the 2013 campaign with two contests in Florida, welcomed Millersville University to GCU Wednesday afternoon to kick off its home slate. The Marauders topped Georgian Court, 11-7, in the non-conference affair.
In a low-scoring first stanza, Millersville (3-0) took a 4-2 advantage into intermission, which included the first of three goals on the day by midfielder
Ashley Henderson (Sr.-Folsom, Penn.). Corinne Coyle netted both GCU tallies, giving her a team-leading nine on the year.
The Lions (0-2-1) came out hungry in the second session, scoring four unanswered goals to take a 7-4 lead with 22:18 remaining. Millersville gathered themselves and immediately responded with a 7-0 fury of its own to make the score the eventual final of 11-7.
Millersville's
Caitlin Shannon (Jr.-Neshanic Station, N.J.) led all scorers with four goals on the day.
Hannah Vogel (Horsham, Penn.) provided three goals and an assist.
Melissa Williams and
Molly McCourt poured in two goals apiece for the Lions while
Stephanie Gallo collected a goal and an assist.
Lauren Mateja (Sr.-King of Prussia, Penn.) earned the win in net for Millersville. GCU's
Amanda Cathcart tallied four saves in the defeat.
GCU returns to action with a non-conference match Saturday afternoon at Shippensburg. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
