Lakewood, N.J.- Maria Mattioli's free-position shot found the back of net with 35.2 seconds remaining in a third overtime period, snapping a 14-all stalemate, as #2 (South) Holy Family University topped #1 (North) Georgian Court University, 15-14, in the 2013 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament semifinals, hosted by GCU.
The defending-champion Tigers (12-5) will now take on #1 (South) Philadelphia University in Sunday's title game (noon) after the Lady Rams held off #2 (North) Dominican College, 13-12, in another thriller earlier in the afternoon.
The Lions, who had reached the tournament finals each year since women's lacrosse became a CACC offering prior to the 2009 season, end the year with an 8-8-1 mark.
Holy Family's Brigit LaRose (Jr.-Lumberton, N.J.) opened the scoring at 28:23 with a free position goal. The Lions responded with four unanswered tallies, including two by
Stephanie Gallo, to take a 4-1 lead at 22:43. HFU's Brianna Lancetta (So.-Marlton, N.J.) then poured in two straight to cut GCU's advantage to 4-3.
Georgian Court increased its lead to 7-3 with a burst of three straight goals, but was quickly countered by the Tigers with three consecutive tallies of their own to make the score 7-6 Lions. The two squads each traded a pair of goals over the final four minutes of the first half as GCU entered the intermission up 9-8.
HFU opened the second stanza by peppering the GCU defense with three goals as the Tigers ripped the lead from the Lions, moving ahead 11-9 with 25:06 to go in regulation. Down by three (14-11) with 8:35 remaining, Georgian Court rallied to tie the affair at 14-14 with three unanswered over the final 8:35.
Grace Deckert (Fr.-Jarrettsville, Md.) collected five saves on 24 GCU shots to earn the victory in net for Holy Family.
Amanda Cathcart faced 34 shots and tallied nine saves in the Georgian Court net.
Lancetta provided four goals and an assist for the Tigers while Stephanie McNesby (Sr.-Philadelphia, Pa.) tallied five points on three goals and two assists. LaRose garnered a hat trick while teammates Mattioli and Paige Settar (Fr.-Mullica Hill, N.J.) each had two goals and an assist.
