Hillburn, N.Y. (4/9/13)  The Dominican College women's lacrosse team avenged a loss two weeks ago to Georgian Court University by defeating them 12-9 in the series finale between these teams in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division clash played at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.

Freshman attacker Amanda Shelton (Holtsville, N.Y.) led the Lady Chargers with three goals.

Fellow freshman Christina Brennan (Washington Township, N.J.) had a team leading five points on the afternoon (2 goals, 3 assists).

Goalie Brittany Kernan (Clarkstown, N.Y.) had 15 saves in the victory while Amanda Cathcart collected 13 saves for Georgian Court in the defeat.

GCU held a 1-0 lead, after a Corinne Coyle goal, when midfielder Trac-Joan Muniz (Middlesex, N.J.) tied the game with 26:07 left in the first half on a free position shot.  After an unassisted goal by Catherine Dee, sophomore Gina Sparaco (Freeport, N.Y.) netted her 12th goal of the year to tie the game at 2-2.

From there GCU went on a 3-0 run, courtesy of goals from Melissa Williams, Molly McCourt and a second by Dee, to go ahead 5-2 with just over ten minutes remaining in the half, before the Lady Chargers came charging back with three unanswered goals to tie the game, 5-5 with 5:17 to go.  Junior attacker Brianna Blank (Point Pleasant, N.J.) had the first and third goal of the run, while Shelton recorded the second goal.  Brennan picked up two assists, while sophomore Allison Smithwick (Commack, N.Y.) had the other.

Williams' second tally put GCU back in front 6-5, but DC rallied once again with a 2-0 spurt off of goals from Brennan and Shelton to take a 7-6 lead at the intermission.

Less than thirty seconds into the second half, GCU tied the game at 7-7, completing the hat trick for Williams.  Dominican answered back with a 5-0 run to pull ahead 12-7 with 6:15 left.  Shelton began the run with her third game goal, followed by Smithwick, who scored her team leading 22nd goal of the season.  Brennan tallied the third goal of the run off the pass from Kelly Barbarite (Smithtown, N.Y.) and recorded the assist on the goal from Sparaco.  Midfielder Emily Murray (Oakdale, N.Y.) ended the DC scoring run off the pass from Brennan.

GCU ended the game with a 2-0 run (Olivia Rotunno, Coyle) for the final 12-9 score.

With the win, Dominican improves to 4-5 overall and 4-2 in the CACC while the Lions dip to 4-5-1 on the year (4-2 CACC).
