Lafayette Hill, Pa.- Break up the Lions! The Georgian Court University Men's Soccer club stunned host-Chestnut Hill College with a 2-1, double overtime triumph Wednesday afternoon at Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School, giving the Lions their third victory in as many games to start the program's initial campaign. The win also marks the squad's first vs. a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opponent (3-0, 1-0 CACC).
The Griffins (1-2, 0-1 CACC) took a 1-0 advantage in the first stanza when
Robert Stocklin (Sr.-Mount Laurel, N.J.) headed in a
Darius Gbunblee (Philadelphia, Pa.) pass at 31:47.That score would hold until GCU's red-hot
Michael Clarke netted his CACC-leading fourth goal of the year after running with a
Ryan Peters' feed and burying the game-tying tally at 67:27.
After a scoreless intial overtime period, the 1-1 stalemate would carry over to a second OT session. Georgian Court's
Garrett McVeigh took matters into his own "hands" at 104:40, swiping the ball from a Chestnut Hill defender and promptly depositing the game-winner.
GCU net-minder
Rylan Gentil remained perfect in goal for the Lions, collecting seven saves in the complete-game effort. The Griffins'
James Jackson (Fr.-Sewell, N.J.) garnered three saves in the defeat. Chestnut Hill outshot the Lions, 22-15, while GCU owned a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks.
Georgian Court returns home on Friday with a non-conference match vs. Barry University. Start time is slated for 3:30 p.m. on Investors Savings Bank Field.
