Barry University Nets Three Unanswered Goals to Top Lions, 3-1

Ricardo Vascones
Lakewood, N.J.- After permitting an initial tally by Georgian Court University early in the first half, visiting Barry University rattled off three unanswered scores of its own as the Buccaneers defeated the Lions, 3-1, in men's soccer action Friday afternoon on Investors Savings Bank Field.

It was the first victory of the season for Barry (1-2), as well as the first defeat for the Lions (3-1) in 2013.

The Lions jumped out to a 1-0 advantage at 6:35 when Ricardo Vascones popped in a shot off a mighty free kick, courtesy of GCU goalkeeper Rylan Gentil. Barry's Mumbi Kwesele (Fr.-Des Momes, Wash.) provided the equalizer at 40:13 when he one-timed a Bryan Brown (So.-Lewes, Del.) feed.

Thomas Coombes (So.-Newcastle, England) netted the game-winner for Barry less than five minutes into the second half (49:34) when he deposited a chip shot over a charging Gentil. The third and final goal came off a Esteban Ochoa (Fr.-Tamarac, Fla.) blast just beyond the 18 at 64:50.

The Buccaneers dominated with a 19-8 shot advantage and a 7-2 lead in corner kicks. Gentil provided six saves for GCU in 68:27 of action. Barry's Johnny Rodrigues (Sr.-Rio de Janiero, Brazil) snagged five saves in the victory.

The Lions take the weekend off before returning to action Monday afternoon with a 3:00 p.m. home contest vs. Shippensburg University.
