Newark, Del.- The Georgian Court University women's soccer team suffered a stunning defeat to host-Wilmington University Wednesday afternoon as the Wildcats bested the Lions, 2-1, in overtime. The victory clinched the #7 seed for WU in next week's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Tournament while GCU takes the #6 spot.
The Lions (10-5-3, 7-4-1 CACC) will now travel to #3 Holy Family University (10-5, 9-3 CACC) Monday afternoon (2:00 p.m.) to face the Tigers in the quarterfinal round of the 2014 bracket. GCU defeated HFU, 1-0, back on September 23 in Lakewood, N.J.
After a scoreless first half,
Lizzy Kroon lit the scoreboard in favor of the road team when she smashed a
Morgan Peacock pass into the net from 25 yards out, tallying her team-leading 10th goal of the year at 82:57.
Wilmington (6-11, 6-6 CACC) wasted very little time to even the match at 1-1 as
Loran Wyrough tapped in her ninth of the season off an
Ashley Kroll feed just 1:49 (84:46) after GCU's initial score.
With regulation ending in a 1-1 stalemate, Kroll needed only 3:19 of the overtime period to secure the postseason-clinching triumph for the Wildcats, chipping in her second goal of the season on a
Chelsea Grace assist.
Julia Brown corralled eight saves in 93:20 to secure the win in the Wimington net while reigning CACC Defensive Player of the Week
Casey O'Connor collected four saves in the tough-luck defeat.
