Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University volleyball squad, riding a 9-1 run in the fifth-and-deciding set, squeaked out a 3-2 victory over visiting Bloomfield College (#4 North) Tuesday evening in the quarterfinals round of the 2014 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Tournament.
With the victory, the #1 overall seed will now host Post University (#2 North) Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in the semifinals as the Lions continue their quest for a second consecutive conference crown. Caldwell University (#1 North) and Wilmington University (#2 South) will match up in the second semifinal at 3:30 p.m., which will also be played in the GCU Wellness Center.
Georgian Court (20-13) took the first set, 25-22, before the Bears (15-15) countered with a 25-15 victory in set two. GCU countered in the third by the same 25-15 margin before Bloomfield forced the deciding set with a 25-19 triumph in set four. BC owned an 8-6 at the switch of the fifth frame before the Lions roared to the 15-9 win.
First-Team All-CACC selection
Tatiana Villariny Rodriguez (Sr.-Rio Grande, P.R.) paced the GCU offense with 17 kills while
Anabelle Barinas (Sr.-Newark, N.J.) contributed 15 of her own. Second-Team selection
Kelsey Oliver (So.-Vancouver, Wash.) dished a match-best 49 assists while
Francheska Cedres (Gr.-Carolina, P.R.) and J
ennifer Smith (So.-Redlands, Calif.) added 19 and 11 digs, respectively.
Diannmarie Rivera (Jr.-Trujillo Alto, P.R.) tallied a double-double for the Bears with 15 digs and 13 kills while
Deandra Black (Sr.-East Brunswick, N.J.) and
Elizabeth Meyer (So.-Ostego, Minn.) registered 11 kills apiece.
Jacquelyn Madlock (So.-Alta Loma, Calif.) shared 43 assists.
Ashley Wright (So.-Moreno Valley, Calif.) controlled 10 digs for Bloomfield.
GCU lost a 3-2 decision (25-23, 25-22, 13-25, 18-25, 7-15) at Post University back on October 4 in the two teams' only meeting this season.
