Wilmington University Pulls Away for 82-74 Home Win vs. Georgian Court

Newark, Del.- The Wilmington University men's basketball squad, behind 35 points by Tyaire Ponzo-Meek (So.-Wilmington, Del.), secured an 82-74 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over visiting Georgian Court University in Wednesday night hoops action.

The Wildcats, winners of three straight, improve to 3-7 (2-2 CACC) on the year while the Lions dip to 2-9 overall (0-5 CACC).

Wilmington sprinted to a 14-5 advantage just 5:51 into the contest while maintaining the nine-point surplus with a lead of 24-15 with 7:46 left before intermission. GCU proceeded to rally for a speedy 9-0 spurt to knot the affair at 24-all, which concluded with a Jordan Wejnert (Sr.-Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) jumper at the 4:53 mark. A Chris Polanco (Fr.-New York, N.Y.) three-pointer provided the Lions their first lead of the night, 29-26, with 3:09 to go in the first.

A Tajee Almon (Jr.-Gloucester, N.J.) layup put the home team ahead by four (35-31) with 0:40 remaining, but Michael Pierre's (Fr.-Melrose, N.Y.) half-court, three-point heave at the horn put GCU within one heading into the locker room.

Georgian Court opened the second stanza with a run of 10-5 to go ahead, 44-40, 4:18 into the period. A pair of free throws by Ponzo-Meek at the 14:29 mark returned the lead to Wilmington, 45-44, a lead the Wildcats would not relinquish the rest of the way.

Ponzo-Meek shot a ergonomic 10-for-16 from the floor, including six three-pointers, and 9-for-12 from the charity stripe in the monster effort for the victors.

Wejnert topped the Lions with a team-best 22 points while Pierre kept pace with 19 points of his own. Juwuan Carter (Fr.-Paterson, N.J.), GCU's leading scorer on the year, contributed 11 points with Polanco dropping in 10 off the bench.

The Lions travel to the University of the Sciences Saturday afternoon for a CACC contest at 3:00 p.m.
