Wilmington, Del.- The Georgian Court University men's basketball squad, playing the first overtime contest in program history, suffered a bummer of a defeat Wednesday evening as the Lions succumbed to host-Goldey Beacom College, 82-78, in double overtime.
The defeat marks the fifth straight for the Lions as they tumble to 2-6 (0-3 CACC) on the year while the Lightning reach the .500 mark at 3-3 overall (1-0 CACC).
In a back and forth first half, the contest was knotted at 27-27 after a dunk by Georgian Court's
Keith Hughes (So.-Woodbridge, N.J.) with 44 seconds remaining before intermission. That turned out to be plenty of time for GBC as the Lightning rolled in two lay-ups before the final horn to secure a 31-27 advantage heading into the locker room.
Goldey-Beacom increased the buffer in the second stanza as the home team went ahead, 42-33, just 3:45 into the session. The Lions proceeded to pounce with a thrilling 10-0 blanking of the Lightning to inch ahead by one (43-42) after a
Hamilton Capellan (R-Fr., Perth Amboy, N.J.) at the 11:28 mark.
The affair continued to ebb and flow to both sides over the remaining minutes.
Jordan Wejnert (Sr.-Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) tied the game at 58-58 (the eighth tie of the night) with a pair of free throws with 1:45 left while teammate
Chris Polanco (Fr.-New York, N.Y.) snapped the stalemate and put the visitors ahead by a deuce, placing the Lions ever so close to their first-ever Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference triumph.
GBC's
Chris Gebhart (Sr.-Cherry Hill, N.J.) had other plans, to GCU's shagrin, as the senior dropped in a lay-up as time expired to send the game into extra time.
With 20 ticks left on the clock in the initial overtime session, a Wejnert free throw put the Lions ahead, 68-66, as the Lions were again primed to seal the victory. However, it was
Derrick Archie's (Sr.-Wilmington, Del.) turn to provide the heartache as he slipped in a lay-up of his own with 00:05 left to force a second overtime period.
The Lightning put an end to the drama in the final 5:00 as GBC took off on a 12-3 spurt to secure a commanding 80-71 advantage with 1:22 left, essentially sealing the hard-earned "W".
Domineek Owens (Jr.-Philadelphia, Pa.) was the scoring star for the victors as he poured in 24 points over 47 minutes, including a stellar 9-for-10 shooting from the free-throw line.
GCU's Wejnert paced all players with his season-high 25 points, nailing 9-of-12 from the floor, in 40 minutes of play. Hughes provided a double-double effort of 17 points and a program-record 15 rebounds in 43 minutes.
Juwuan Carter (Fr.-Paterson, N.J.) and Polanco followed with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Georgian Court returns to action Saturday afternoon with a 3:00 p.m. conference showdown at Caldwell University.
