Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University lacrosse squad won its fifth straight contest Saturday afternoon with a 13-9 defeat of division-rival Dominican College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action.
The Lions remain undefeated in conference play (3-0) while improving to 5-3 overall. The Lady Chargers continue to seek their first triumph of the season as they fall to 0-4 on the year (0-2 CACC).
GCU jumped out to a 3-0 lead just 7:21 into the game, courtesy of a goal by
Callie Brown and two scores from
Melissa Williams.
Allison Smithwick (Jr.-Commack, N.Y.) put Dominican on the board with a goal at 22:20, making the deficit 3-1. Brown answered with two more tallies to put GCU up 5-1 with 17:47 to go in the half.
The two clubs would alternate the next three goals to make the score 6-3 Lions before Williams zipped in her third and fourth tallies of the half to provide Georgian Court an 8-3 lead with 6:12 remaining. Dominican's Smithwick and
Christina Brennan (So.-Washington Township, N.J.) countered with scores to put the Lady Chargers within three (8-5) with 3:53 to go.
After coming out of the intermission up 9-5,
Emily Gialanella and Williams found the back of the net to start the second stanza and provide the Lions with an 11-5 lead. Dominican's
Emily Murray (Jr.-Oakdale, N.Y.) rifled in two consecutive scores to put the visitors within four at 11-7 with 18:40 left. GCU's
Kerry Stader halted the Dominican attack with two straight tallies of her own, with the second coming at 16:38.
Williams shined for the Lions with nine points on the day, which included five goals and four assists. Brown registered a hat trick, to go along with an assist, for a four-point afternoon. Stader added an assist to go with her pair of goals. Gialanella also scored two of her own.
Smithwick paced the Dominican offense with her two goals and two assists.
Kelly Barbarite (So., Smithtown, N.Y.) tallied two goals and an assist while Brennan and Murray registered two scores on the day.
Stephanie Lehner (5-0) remains perfect in net for the Lions, collecting seven saves in the victory.
Brittany Kiernan (So.-Clarkstown, N.Y.) suffered the loss for Dominican, tallying 11 saves in the effort.
The Lions take to the road this Tuesday as GCU journeys to first-year program Caldwell College. Start time is set for noon.
