Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University lacrosse squad continues to gel as the Lions edged visiting Wilmington University, 9-6, in a thrilling Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) showdown Thursday afternoon on Investors Savings Bank Field. GCU (7-2) has now won seven consecutive contests and remains perfect in conference play at 5-0.
The Wildcats drop to 3-4 and suffer their first defeat vs. CACC foes (2-1).
Wilmington jumped out to a quick 3-0 advantage by the 24:03 mark. Georgian Court's
Callie Brown netted her 20th goal of the year at 18:17 to cut the deficit to 3-1. However,
Ashley Kroll (Jr.-Baltimore, Md.) scored her second tally of the half at 11:59 to give the Wildcats a 4-1 lead. GCU proceeded to rattle off three unanswered scores,courtesy of Brown and two from
Melissa Williams, to tie the affair at 4-4 with 3:36 remaining before intermission.
Rebekah McCurry (Jr.-St. Leonard, Md.) snapped the stalemate with 1:50 to go, putting the Wildcats up, 5-4, heading into the half.
Williams commenced the second half of scoring with her third goal at 22:41 to tie the game at 5-all. Kroll obtained her hat trick with 19:52 remaining to provide the Wildcats with a 6-5 surplus. The Lions answered with four straight tallies to end the game, including the game-tying shot by
Emily Gialanella at 17:50 and game-winner by Williams (4th of the day, 28th of the year) with 15:46 to go.
Stephanie Lehner collected her seventh straight win (7-0) in the Lions' net, compiling eight saves in the complete-game effort.
Corinne Dries (Bear, Del.) suffered the loss for Wilmington, which included 11 saves on the day.
GCU next plays this Saturday with a CACC road contest at Chestnut Hill College. Start time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
