Lakewood, N.J.- In their first meeting since last season's epic semifinal showdown in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Tournament, the Georgian Court University lacrosse squad again dropped a one-goal decision to two-time defending champion Holy Family University, this time by the score of 11-10 Saturday morning.
The Tigers, with the triumph, improve to 5-3 in conference play (5-7 overall) while the Lions dip to 8-2 vs. CACC foes (11-4 overall). The two squads last met on 4/27/13 when the Tigers topped GCU, 15-14, in a wild triple-overtime contest.
Holy Family jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when
Sarah Kelly (Jr.-Washington Twp., N.J.) and
Brigit LaRose (Sr.-Lumberton, N.J.) tallied goals for the visitors in the first six minutes of action. GCU's
Kerry Stader cut the deficit in half with her 18th goal of the season at 22:27. The two clubs proceeded to exchange scores before LaRose (16:42) and
Paige Settar (So.-Mullica Hill, N.J.) put the Tigers up 5-2 at 10:18.
Georgian Court rallied with three unanswered goals in the final 7:37, including two by conference-leader
Melissa Williams, to even the score at 5-5 headed into intermission.
LaRose netted her third of the contest and Settar her second to start the second stanza and put the Tigers up 7-5.
Callie Brown completed her own personal hat trick (four overall) and
Silvetta Agosto drilled her first of the day to even the score at 7-7 with 27:13 to go.
With the two teams locked in a stalemate of 8-8, the Tigers poured in three straight tallies to mount an 11-8 advantage with 10:39 left.
Cat Dee (6:24) and
Emily Gialanella (5:52) garnered late scores for the Lions, but the GCU comeback would come to a halt at that point.
Grace Deckert (So.-Jarretsville, Md.) earned the win for the Tigers, tallying 11 saves in the contest.
Stephanie Lehner dropped to 11-2 between the GCU pipes, collecting 13 saves in the process.
The Lions travel to Dominican College Monday at 4:15 p.m. for a key North Division at Dominican College. GCU defeated the Lady Chargers, 13-9, back on March 22.
