Waterbury, Conn.- The Georgian Court University men's basketball squad, in a game closely-contested for the majority, fell short Saturday afternoon at Post University, 71-62, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) hoops action.
In a first half that provided six stalemates and leads that never exceeded four points for either team for the first 15:17 of action, GCU (5-20, 2-16 CACC) broke the trend and took a 28-23 advantage with just 4:20 remaining before intermission. The Lions doubled that surplus, leading 37-27 with 1:08 to go, before the Eagles (10-12, 9-7 CACC) cut it back to five, 37-32, prior to the break.
Georgian Court increased its lead to 42-34 after a
Michael Pierre three-pointer 1:39 into the second stanza. Post proceeded to rattle off a 9-0 run to take the lead at the 13:23 mark, 43-42. The Lions battled back to take a 50-49 edge after a
Jordan Wejnert throwdown with 9:44 to go. The lead would be the last of the day for GCU as the Eagles went ahead for good, 53-50, after a
David Seymour (Jr.-Amityville, N.Y.) three-pointer with 9:13 remaining.
Matt Mareno (Fr.-San Francisco, Calif.) shined for Post with a dazzling 29 points and 15 rebounds. Seymour followed with his 16 points while
Nardie Bogues (Sr.-Baltimore, Md.) dropped in 11.Â
As for the Lions, Wejnert topped the road warriors with 19 points, followed closely by 18 from
Juwuan Carter. Pierre finished the day with 12 points.
GCU returns home for an 8:00 p.m. contest Tuesday night vs. University of the Sciences. Prior to tip, the squad will celebrate its first-ever Senior Night as they recognize the collegiate career of Wejnert.
