Orangeburg, N.Y.- Fresh off its five-day, two-game journey to Florida, the Georgian Court University men's soccer squad made its return to the northeast known, as the Lions travelled to Dominican College Tuesday afternoon and defeated the host-Chargers, 3-1, in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) lid-lifter for both teams.
The Lions, now 1-2 (1-0 CACC) on the season, improve to 2-0-1 in the first conference contest of the year over the program's young three-year history. Dominican remains winless with its 0-3 overall mark (0-1 CACC).
GCU jumped out to very early 1-0 advantage when freshman #
Arturo Sanchez# netted his first collegiate goal, an unassisted tally, just 3:45 into the contest. The Chargers countered in the 39th minute (38:02) as
Lukas Nordin (Sr.-Lidkoping, Sweden) drilled a penalty kick the tied the affair at 1-1.
The score would remain that way until the second stanza when the Lions proved in dramatic fashion that where there's a Will (or two) there's a way as #
Will Green# booted home the eventual game-winner at 64:58, courtesy of a
Will Docherty assist.
#
Michael Clarke# added the insurance strike at 79:25 when he squared up a Joe Esposito feed to make the score 3-1 GCU. The goal for Clarke marked the second of the season for the junior and the 20th of his impressive collegiate career.
Georgian Court owned a slight 12-10 shot advantage, but Dominican held the lead in corner kicks, 9-5.
Aleksandar Milosevic earned his first victory in goal for GCU, collecting five saves in 90:00. Dominican keeper
Steven Hegner (Jr.-Pomona, N.Y.) garnered three saves in the Dominican defeat.
The victors now receive a much-needed hiatus as the Lions do not return to the pitch again until Tuesday, September 15 with a 3:30 p.m. non-conference home game vs. Dowling College.
