Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University volleyball squad extended its winning streak to five consecutive victories, and improved to 5-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play, as the Lions needed every bit of five sets to escape with a 3-2 win over visiting Caldwell University in the first of three Homecoming Saturday matches.
GCU (8-11 overall) took a marathon first-set, 25-23, before the Cougars (10-8, 3-3 CACC) tied it up with a 25-21 win in set two. The Lions rallied for a 27-25 victory in #3, pushing Caldwell to the brink. However, the visitors cruised in set four, 25-15, setting the stage for a nail-biting fifth-and-final game in which the home team ultimately triumphed, 15-13.
The stat sheets were busting at the seams after the 2:11 affair as three Lions achieved double-doubles in the win, including:
Jessica Pedroza (13 kills, 22 digs),
Peggy Rosario (13 kills, 19 digs), and
Kelsey Oliver (48 assists, 10 digs).
Kelsie Blue added 12 kills and five blocks while
Janelli Torres paced the victors with 27 digs.
In the nightcap, an exhausted GCU roster fell to Southern Connecticut State University (10-7) by a 3-0 score (9-25, 23-25, 22-25).Â
Georgian Court returns to conference action this Wednesday night with a highly-anticipated contest at Philadelphia University. The first serve is set to go up at 6:00 p.m.
