Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University women's soccer squad hosted Holy University University in GCU's final home game of the 2016 regular season Wednesday afternoon. However, before the Lions and Tigers took the pitch, the team paid tribute to 11 teammates in a special pregame Senior Day celebration.
The collective group of
Amanda Astudillo,
Tayler Bramley,
Jillian Behan,
Jessica Constantine,
Megan Hubbard,
Elysia Jimenez,
Melinda MacNeil,
Megan Melchionne,
Diana Mikula,
Laura Nelson and
Morgan Peacock was recognized for its contribution to the team and university while also being honored for its acheivements on the field, in the classroom, and within the GCU community.
Once the pomp and circumstance subsided, there was a soccer game to be played. After a scoreless first half, the second stanza looked as if it would be a carbon copy. However, Holy Family's
Shannon Metzler (Erial, N.J.) had other plans as the junior headed in a
Casey Rodgers (Fr.-Philadelphia, Pa.) corner kick at 76:52 for what would be the lone goal of HFU's (8-7-2, 7-3-2 CACC) eventual 1-0 triumph.
The loss marked the Lions' first home defeat of the season and first on home turf since 10/15/14 vs. Philadelphia University, snapping GCU 's 17-0-1 unbeaten streak within the friendly confines of Georgian Court.
The Lions (11-4-1, 8-2-1 CACC) will play their final game of the regular season Friday at Concordia College. Start time is set for 3pm.Â
