Wilmington, Del.-
Keith Hughes, an original member of the Georgian Court University men's basketball squad, became the first player since the program's inception in 2013-14 to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau as the senior and his teammates took on the Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College Wednesday evening in CACC competition.
Needing five points to reach the magic mark, Hughes sank the first of two free throws 4:40 into the second half to forever etch his name into the Georgian Court hoops annals.
As for the rest of the contest, the Lions (0-7, 0-3 CACC) are still seeking their first triumph of the year as GCU dropped an 80-50 decision to the host-Lightning (4-2, 2-1 CACC).
In a closely-contested first half, GCU and GBC were knotted at 28-28 with just 0:59 remaining before a
Khalil Keel (Sr.-Philadelphia, Pa.) three-ball pushed the Lightning ahead, 31-28, with 39 ticks remaining before intermission.
A
Nikola Vujovic jumper kept the Lions within three points (35-32) 1:52 into the second stanza, but a 28-7 sprint by the home team quickly put the affair out of reach with 8:44 remaining in regulation (63-39).
Vujovic and
Juwuan Carter topped Georgian Court with 12 points apiece while Hughes cleaned the glass of seven rebounds.
GCU returns to the home hardwood Saturday afternoon with a 3:00 p.m. CACCÂ collision vs. the University of the Sciences.
