Lions Show Grit in Non-Conference Road Tilt Tuesday Night in New Haven

West Haven, Conn.- The Georgian Court University men's basketball squad still seeks its first sweet taste of victory away from the Wellness Center as the Lions were upended at the University of New Haven, 70-56, Tuesday evening in an NCAA Division II non-conference contest.

The Chargers (6-5) jumped out to a 20-11 advantage 6:55 into the first half. GCU proceeded to mount a mighty 18-6 run, capped by a Caleb Bowser three-ball, to take a 29-26 lead with 4:29 remaining before intermission. With the score knotted at 31-31 at the 2:54 mark, the home team squeezed in a quick 6-0 spurt to close the half ahead, 37-31.

The UNH lead would grow to 48-37 5:57 into the second stanza. Georgian Court (1-11) clawed back to within three points at 7:40 after a Juwuan Carter layup sliced the deficit to 50-47. Unfortunately, the Lions simply ran out of gas as the Chargers steamed to a game-high lead of 19 points (68-49) at the 1:52 mark after an 18-2 sprint.

"I thought we had our best defensive game of the season, holding them (UNH) to 40% (26-for-65) shooting for the game," said GCU Head Coach Terrence Stewart. "We just didn't do the little things like box out and take care of the ball, to give ourselves a chance to win. I thought, overall, we played hard and competed."

Tony Ellington, Jr. and Nikola Vujovic sparked the Georgian Court offense with a team-best 16 points apiece while Vujovic controlled the glass with nine boards. Carter added 12 points of his own in the effort. New Haven's Danny Upchurch (Jr.-Bridegeport, Conn.) topped all scorers with his 17 points, including three three-pointers, while Mihailo Vasic (Jr.-Novi Sad, Serbia) authored an impressive double-double consisting of 14 points and 13 rebounds.

The Lions now trek back home to host Franklin Pierce University Monday afternoon at 5:00 p.m.
