Philadelphia, Pa.- In their first meeting since Georgian Court University's thrilling double overtime triumph in last season's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship Tournament semifinals, the Lions and Philadelphia University squared off Wednesday to kick off conference play for both squads.
It would be the Lady Rams that would walk away victorious this time as the home team dismissed their rival by a final score of 15-11.
GCU (0-8, 0-1 CACC) compiled an initial 2-1 lead after 6:10 of action, courtesy of scoring efforts from
Callie Brown and
Silvetta Agosto. Unfortunately, that would be the one and only surplus of the afternoon for the Lions as the Lady Rams proceeded to pepper the Georgian Court net with five unanswered tallies to obtain a 6-2 advantage with 7:44 left in the first half.
The Lions would secure three of the final four goals of the opening stanza, but Philadelphia (4-4, 1-0 CACC) would enter intermission ahead, 7-5. The two clubs would counter with two goals apiece to open the second and make the score 9-7 Lady Rams, but Philly would turn on the afterburners and break open the contest with a six-goal flurry, resulting in an insurmountable 14-7 lead with 6:22 remaining.
Isabella DiGnazio (Jr.-Pittsburgh, Pa.) was a thorn in the paws of the Lions, draining a game-best five goals.
Elizabeth Seitzinger (Sr.-Schnecksville, Pa.) added a hat trick of her own while
Liz Mower (Sr.-Harleysville, Pa.) contributed two goals and three assists to the Lady Rams' win.
Agosto carried the GCU offense with four goals on the afternoon.
Melissa Williams provided five points (1 goal, 4 assists) while Brown,
Kayanna Chandler, and
Samantha Fernandez netted two goals apiece.
Corrine Etter (So.-Millville, N.J.) secured the victory in the Lady Rams' net, collecting 10 saves in 43:35 of action. GCU's
Stephanie Lehner denied 14 opposing scoring attempts in the complete-game outing.
Georgian Court returns home to host the reigning CACC champions, Holy Family University, this Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
