Lakewood, N.J.- The #3-seed Georgian Court University women's lacrosse squad has advanced to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Tournament semifinals for the eighth straight season as the Lions sent #6 Wilmington University (4-12) packing with a 22-11 defeat of the Wildcats Tuesday afternoon.
GCU (7-11) now advances to take on #2-seed Chestnut Hill College (10-7) Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. right here at Georgian Court. The Lions fell to the Griffins, 6-5, back on April 13 at CHC.
In a first half that witnessed 23 total goals, and took over an hour to complete, GCU jumped out to an initial 3-2 advantage 5:48 in the contest. The Lions proceeded to fling in four unanswered tallies to increase its surplus to 7-2 with 21:45 left before intermission. Georgian Court would edge Wilmington, 8-6, over the remaining 21+ minutes to coast into the break with a 15-8 lead.
The second stanza, in contrast to the first-half scoring bonanza, would produce just 10 goals, seven of which were contributed by the home team.
Melissa Williams drained her third of four goals on the day at the 16:55 mark of the first half, providing the senior scoring machine the 200th tally of her collegiate career, making her the second student-athlete to accomplish the feat in the 10-season history of the GCU women's lacrosse program (
Ryan McGrath, 2008-11). Williams also provided three assists in the rout.
Callie Brown buried four goals (1 assist) on the afternoon, as did teammate
Kayanna Chandler.
Samantha Fernandez (two assists) and
Xena Valenzuela registered hat tricks while
Nicole Barbella chipped in two goals and two assists.
Stephanie Lehner achieved her seventh win of the season in net for the Lions, collecting four saves over 60:00 of action.
