Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University women's lacrosse campaign came to a sudden close Saturday afternoon as the #3-seed Lions suffered a 14-10 defeat at the hands of #2-Chestnut Hill College in the 2016 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Tournament semifinals, hosted by GCU.
The Lions conclude the calendar with a 7-12 record while the Griffins (11-7) move on to Sunday's championship game where they will take on #1-seed Philadelphia University. The Lady Rams dropped #4-seed Holy Family University by a 12-8 count in Saturday's earlier contest to advance.
Emorie Keimig (Sr.-Freeland, Md.) netted the first two goals of the game to provide CHC an initial 2-0 advantage. The Lions answered with three straight to grab a 3-2 lead with 18:19 remaining in the first half. The Griffins erased the GCU run with three unanswered markers to go up 5-3 with 9:11 left.
Seniors
Callie Brown and
Silvetta Agosto popped home a goal each to put Georgian Court even at 5-5 with Chestnut Hill, but an unassisted tally by
Lea Sanders (Jr.-North Merrick, NY) snapped the stalemate and provided the Griffins a one-goal surplus heading into intermission.
Melissa Williams opened the second stanza with two quick goals 7:16 into the session to put the Lions ahead, 7-6. Unfortunately for GCU, Chestnut Hill would respond with four straight scoring efforts, to take what would prove to be an insurmountable 10-7 lead for the Griffins with 14:27 remaining in regulation.
Williams would delay the inevitable with two quick scores at the 1:18 and 1:06 marks of the half, representing the 205th and 206th goals of the senior's stellar collegiate career. The Egg Harbor Township, N.J. native passes
Ryan McGrath ('11) as the all-time scoring leader in the 10-year history of GCU women's lacrosse.
Callie Brown trailed Williams (five goals) in the box score with two goals and an assist while Agosto recorded a goal and two helpers.
Kiemeg topped the Chestnut Hill offense with five goals of her own with teammate
Julia Reinert (Fr.-Bridgeport, Pa.) authoring a hat trick for the victors.
Katie Joe Lang (Jr.-Manassas, Va.) denied 11 Georgian Court shots to improve to 11-7 in the CHC net.
Stephanie Lehner suffered the defeat in the Lions' net, collecting five saves in the outing.
