Lakewood, N.J.- Less than 24 hours after Friday's crushing five-set setback at Chestnut Hill College, the Georgian Court University volleyball squad returned to the hardwood Saturday morning with a home twin-bill vs. Bloomfield College and Molloy College in the GCU Wellness Center.
The day opened with the Lions facing off their CACC rival, Bloomfield, in the teams' first meeting since the Bears upended GCU in last year's conference tournament quarterfinals. Georgian Court secured the first set, 25-19, before Bloomfield proceeded to steamroll the home team in the next two stanzas (25-9, 25-14) to take a momentum-filled 2-1 lead.
The Lions, in no mood to relive the past, gathered some guts and swiped the next two games (25-19, 15-8) to earn the always-important conference victory.
Peggy Rosario fell one dig short of her second double-double in as many games (13 kills, 9 digs) while
Jessica Pedroza came up short in the kills column (9 kills, 10 digs) of accomplishing her own double-double feat.
Kelsey Oliver did cross the double-double threshold with 43 assists and 16 digs.
Janelli Torres placed a close second to Oliver with 14 digs of her own.
In the nightcap, GCU (3-9, 1-1 CACC) matched up with a tired Molloy club, which was coming off a five-set marathon of its own vs. Bloomfield. In the battle of the Lions, it was the Georgian Court variety that would survive as the home team dismissed its visitor by a 3-0 count (25-22, 25-17, 25-17).
Rosario would achieve her sixth double-double effort of the year in the victory as the sophomore dropped a 10-spot in both the kills and digs columns. Pedroza topped her teammates with 11 digs to along with seven kills while freshman
Kathryn vonKampen drilled 10 kills of her own. Oliver dished a game-best 36 assists.
GCU will next welcome Adelphi University to "The Well" Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. in non-conference competition.
