Wilmington, Del.- For the first time this season, the Georgian Court University men's soccer squad finished on the short end of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest as the Lions suffered a 3-2 setback at Goldey-Beacom College Wednesday afternoon.
Today's defeat snaps the Lions' (3-3, 3-1 CACC) three-game winning streak while the Lightning improve to 5-1 overall (3-0 CACC).
The future looked bright early for the visitors as a
Garrett McVeigh goal (his second of the year) provided GCU a 1-0 advantage just 1:33 into the game. Goldey-Beacom's
Rerom Delys (Sr.-Vila Velha, Brazil) erased the deficit at 19:47 when he pelted a shot inside the right post from 10 yards out.
The Lightning registered its first advantage of the day just short of intermission (40:52) when
Omar Hernandez (Jr.-West Grove, Pa.) belted in his first goal of the year from six yards away.
GCU, not used to playing from behind as of late, knotted the affair at 2-2 when program scoring leader,
Michael Clarke, knocked home a
Craig Smith feed inside the low left post for his first tally of the year at 50:43. Smith earned an assist on both of the Lions' scoring efforts on the day.
The stalemate stood strong until the 82nd minute (81:52) when
Nicholas Jaramillo (Fr.-Cali, Columbia) buried an unassisted deflection for the Goldey-Beacom game-winner.
In a battle of this week's CACC Co-Defensive Players of the Week, GBC's
Suhail Bismilla (So.-Johannesburg, South Africa) came out on top on this day with six saves in the victory. GCU's
Yianni Kavarakas achieved three saves in net for the Lions.
Georgian Court outshot the Lightning by a margin of 15-13.
The Lions return home this Saturday for a CACC match-up with Nyack College on Youth Soccer Appreciation Day. Start time is slated for 2:30 p.m.
