Lakewood, N.J.-After having not played an overtime period in over three years, the Georgian Court University women's basketball squad found itself playing a fifth frame for the second straight outing as the Lions forced Goldey-Beacom College to the brink before falling to the Lightning, 75-66, Tuesday evening in the GCU Wellness Center.
The Lions slip to 2-8 on the young season and still seek their first win in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) competition (0-3). Goldey-Beacom moves to 2-1 in conference play (4-8 overall).
After ending the first half with a slim 31-27 advantage, the Lightning scorched GCU in the third period with a 22-8 blasting to create a comfy 53-35 cushion. Not willing to start its Christmas break earlier than anticipated, Georgian Court removed itself from the naughty list and rattled off a 25-7 run to knot the contest at 60-60 with a minute left in regulation, courtesy of a
Jess Placher three-ball.
Neither team could capitalize in the clutch as both foes came up short on two shots apiece in the final 60 seconds.
GBC wasted zero time in the extra period as the Lightning lit up the scoreboard with seven points in the first 1:26 of OT to gain a commanding 67-60 surplus.
Amanda McGrogan (So.-Mount Laurel, N.J.) drained a pair of free throws at the 1:06 mark to seal the deal with a nine-point advantage.
The loss marks the Lions' seventh straight in extra time with their last OT triumph coming back on Dec. 10, 2009 vs. Chestnut Hill College (77-70).
"This was a very winnable game for us'" admitted GCU head coach,
Jazz Perazic. "It is a huge disappointment, that for the second time in a row, we couldn't find a way to pull out a win. Once we put the right lineup on the floor, improvement was immediately visible. We fought back from a big deficit and almost pulled out a win. Again, there were a lot of things that we should be proud of. Our teamwork and hustle after falling behind was exciting."
Five Lightning players posted double-digit scoring efforts in the victory, topped by
Britani Bryson (Sr.-Hampton, Va.) and
Alanna Speaks (Fr.-Wilmington, Del.) with 14 each. McGrogan authored an impressive double-double performance with 12 points and 13 boards. The sophomore also dished a team-best six helpers in the win.
Coming off Saturday's effort of 24 points, eight assists and two steals at Kutztown,
Carna Prokic enjoyed an almost duplicate showing (18 points, eight assists, eight rebounds, two steals) Tuesday in 40 minutes of action.
Jaelyn Tweedy contributed 16 points while Placher provided 15 of her own, including four three-pointers.
GCU will next return to the hardwood on Saturday, December 30 with a 1:00 p.m. home game vs. Chestnut Hill College.
