GCU Unable to Hold On To Late Double-Digit Lead ... Fall at Home to Chestnut Hill, 93-90

Lakewood, N.J. - The Georgian Court University women's basketball squad closed out the 2017 calendar Saturday afternoon as the Lions, playing their first contest in 11 days, dropped a high-scoring home contest to visiting Chestnut Hill College, 93-90 in the GCU Wellness Center.

The Lions slip to 2-9 on the season (0-4 CACC) while the Griffins move to 8-6 overall (4-1 CACC). Georgian Court eclipsed the 90-point threshold for the first time since Feb. 12, 2005 when GCU dropped a 101-95 overtime decision at home to Dominican College.

GCU enjoyed a hearty 54-43 advantage heading into intermission and increased that lead to a game-high 14-point surplus after a Jess Placher three-pointer put the home team ahead, 61-47, with 7:51 left in the third period. The pesky Griffins proceeded to cut the deficit to as little as six on two occasions in the quarter, but a Carna Prokic three-ball with nine seconds remaining bumped the Lions ahead by ten (74-64) heading into the fourth-and-final frame.

Things unraveled quickly for Georgian Court as Chestnut Hill rolled the Lions with a speedy 11-point run to start the quarter and take a 75-74 lead, capped by a Vicky Tumasz (Sr.-North Wales, Pa.) three-pointer with 7:53 to go in regulation.

GCU cleared its collective head and answered with a 6-0 spurt to go back ahead by five (80-75) with 5:58 left. In a second half filled with runs, the Griffins responded with a 10-0 offensive blasting to go up, 85-80, with 3:12 still on the clock. This proved to be plenty of time for the hot-handed Lions as they roared all the way back to go ahead, 88-87, after a Jaelyn Tweedy jump shot capped an 8-2 run with 26 ticks remaining.

Chestnut Hill's Cassie Sebold (Fr.-Willow Grove, Pa.) slipped in a successful layup seven seconds later to provide the visitors a lead (89-88) they would not relinquish.

The Lions shot a scalding 52.1% from the field, but turned the ball over 22 times, which resulted in 28 points for their foe.

"We are playing with a lot of effort and as a team," stated GCU head Coach, Jazz Perazic. "I do love our effort, but we are  just not yet poised enough to finish games. Our Achilles' heel continues to be our fouling. We put the other team on the line way too much. That remains the main reason for all our losses. In today's game, Chestnut Hill outscored us, 24 -4, from the charity stripe; we must fix this.  We must find a way to win and make this year's conference tournament for them and for our school."

Five Griffins authored double-digit scoring lines on the day with Jaeda Wildgoose (Jr.-Somerset, N.J.) and Shannon Glenn (So.-Philadelphia, Pa.) draining 24 and 21 points, respectively. Wildgoose snared a game-best ten boards to register a double-double. Sebold contributed 19 points for the victors, all coming in the second half.

Prokic continues to dazzle as the GCU go-to popped in 19 points to go with six helpers. Tweedy followed with 18 points and six assists while Placher poured in 16 points off a game-high four three-pointers. Destiny Thompson and Catherine Phipps drained 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The Lions make their 2018 debut Wednesday evening with a 6:00 p.m. conference contest at Holy Family University.
