Box Score Caldwell, N.J.- In a game that never saw a lead reach double-digits, the Georgian Court University men's basketball squad gave Caldwell University a fight to the finish as the host-Cougars held off the visiting Lions, 74-66, Saturday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action.
The Lions (1-22, 1-14 CACC) led by as many as seven points (12-7, 15:11) in the first half and owned a 36-31 surplus with 30 seconds remaining before intermission. However, a quick
Derek Dorn (Jr.-New Rochelle, N.Y.) three-pointer with seven seconds left and a
Vaughn Covington (Fr.-Sicklerville, N.J.) layup at the buzzer knotted the score at 36-all at the half.
The Cougars (12-10, 7-7 CACC) opened the second session on a 12-3 sprint to take a 48-39 advantage with 15:53 left in regulation. However, a three-point play by
Nikola Vujovic made it a one-possession game, cutting the deficit to 61-58 with 4:34 remaining. That would be the end of the GCU threat as Caldwell rode a 13-8 mini-spurt to the final buzzer to secure the victory.
Dorn paced Caldwell with 20 points on the afternoon as the junior made his mark at the charity stripe with a 14-for-21 effort at the line.
Ruud Lutterman (Fr.-Gorinchem, Netherlands) drained 13 for the Cougars while
Austin Woods (Sr.-Milford, Conn.) and
Zay Jennings (Fr.-Allentown, Pa.) accounted for 12 and 11 points, respectively.Â
As for the Lions,
Caleb Bowser topped the GCU offense wth his 16 points, shooting 7-for-11 from the field.
Tony Ellington, Jr. drained 11 points for the visitors while Vujovic poured in 10.
Juwuan Carter fell a point short of a double-double with nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
GCU returns to home turf Tuesday night with a CACC home game vs. Chestnut Hill College at 8:00 p.m.
