Box Score Orangeburg, N.Y.- The Georgian Court University women's lacrosse squad, looking to claim its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championship since 2011, took the first step towards that goal as the Lions grabbed the top-seed in next week's postseason tournament with a 14-11 victory Saturday at Dominican College.
The win secures the 2017 CACCÂ Regular Season title for GCU as the Lions registered a perfect 9-0 ledger (11-6 overall) in conference play. Georgian Court, winners of ten straight contests, will host either #4 Chestnut Hill College or #5 Caldwell University next Saturday at 12:00 p.m. in the GCU Track & Field Complex.
Georgian Court appeared to be a team on a mission at the outset as the visitors netted the first four goals of the contest en route to a seemingly comfortable 11-4 advantage after the initial 30:00 of play.Â
Angelina Palermo's 16th tally of the season at the 8:33 mark of the second increased GCU's surplus to 14-6. The Lady Chargers (8-5, 8-1 CACC), who came into the contest looking for its first-ever undefeated CACC campaign and #1 seed, desperately tried to salvage that goal with a flurry of five tallies over a 5:31 spurt to put the home team to within three with just 2:08 left in regulation.
Arianna Quinlan paced the Lions with six points (four goals, two assists) on the afternoon while
Samantha Fernandez (four goals) and
Xena Valenzuela (three goals, one assist) contributed four points apiece.
Amber Neumann shined in the GCU net with a stellar 17 saves over 60:00 to earn the goal-keeping triumph for the Lions.
2017 marks Georgian Court's fourth perfect regular-season conference record (2009, 2010, 2011) as the Lions prep for their third CACC title (2010, 2011) since women's lacrosse became a conference sport prior to the 2009 campaign.
