Box Score 2 New Haven, Conn. - The Georgian Court University women's volleyball squad traveled north Sunday to compete in a non-conference tri-match, hosted by Southern Connecticut State University.
The Lions opened the afternoon vs. the University of Bridgeport (1-1), eventually falling to the Purple Knights, 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 21-25, 16-25). For the second time in as many matches this season,
Peggy Rosario paced the GCU offense with a team-best 16 kills.
Ashley Pierson and
Jackie Sweeney split setting duties, compiling 20 and 12 assists, respectively.
Gaby Merced proved to be extremely busy on the defensive end as the sophomore libero collected a match-high 18 digs. Three Purple Knights achieved double-digits in the kills column, led by
Amanda Henneman (So.-Nova Petropolis, Brazil) with a game-best 19.
GCU proved to be no match for SCSU in the nightcap as the Owls (3-0) sent the Lions packing in three straight sets by scores of 25-7, 25-20 and 25-12.
Shana Rayside served as the big hitter for Georgian Court (0-3) as the sophomore slammed a team-high seven kills. Pierson dished 10 helpers while Merced and Rosario corralled 18 and 11 digs, respectively.
Leanna Jadus (Jr.-Long Beach, Calif.) dropped a double-double on the Lions with her 16 kills and 13 digs.
The Lions now return home to host their annual GCU Invitational, which will take place this weekend in the Wellness Center. Georgian Court will kick off the event Friday with matches against Mercy College (11:00 a.m.) and NYIT (5:00 p.m.).
