Lakewood, N.J. - The Georgian Court University women's basketball squad returned to the win column Wednesday evening as the Lions upended Concordia College, 66-55, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action. The victory, GCU's first since November 28 (61-59 vs. Salem University), snaps a seven-game slide for the 3-11 Lions (1-6 CACC).
The home team coasted into intermission with a solid 40-21 lead, and increased its surplus to a game-best 25 points (51-26) when
Jess Placher connected on a three-pointer with 47 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The visiting Clippers (1-15, 1-6 CACC) managed to stay afloat in the fourth quarter, outscoring GCU by a 27-15 margin, but it was not nearly enough to overtake the Lions.
"We still have so much work to do, especially on the defensive end," shared GCU head coach,
Jazz Perazic. "We must improve our rebounding. There were quite a few bright spots tonight; I love the way our freshmen played. Both
Gemma Mochi (eight rebounds, six points) and
Nerea Brajac did some great things on both ends of the floor. It was nice to get a "W". We will continue to work and we will get better."
Jaelyn Tweedy provided a balanced attack for the victors with with 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Brajac
followed with 13 points and eight boards of her own while Placher drained 11 points in the triumph.
Concordia's
Amiya Rankins (So.-Somerset, N.J.) topped all players with her 17 points and three blocks.
Nicole Nicholson (So.-Staten Island, N.Y.) added 16 points, including four three-pointers.
Hadiyah Black (Sr.-Brooklyn, N.Y.) snared a game-best 12 rebounds.
The Lions look to build some momentum this Saturday afternoon when they host Caldwell University at 1:00 p.m. in another CACCÂ contest.
