Wilmington, Del.- The Georgian Court University women's basketball squad suffered a 66-59 setback at Goldey-Beacom College Wednesday evening in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference divisional action.
The Lightning improve to 6-12 (4-5 CACC) while the Lions slip to 3-13 overall (1-8 CACC). GBC takes the home-and-home season series from its rival, having escaped the GCU Wellness Center with a 75-66 overtime triumph back on December 19.
Georgian Court kept the home team at a safe distance in the first half as the Lions won the first quarter, 22-20, before entering intermission ahead by three after a three-pointer at the buzzer from
Jess Placher put the Lions ahead, 35-32, heading into the break.
The Lightning turned the tables on its foe in the third by outscoring the Lions, 13-8, in the frame. Entering the final period with an ever-so-slim lead of 45-43, Goldey-Beacom mounted its largest lead of the night with 5.29 left when an
Alanna Speaks (Fr.-Wilmington, Del.) free throw pushed the eventual-victors ahead by seven points (54-47).
A
Jaelyn Tweedy jumper in the paint at the 2:37 mark sliced the GCU deficit to just one at 57-56. However, a subsequent three-ball from
Tanner Turner-Rush (Jr.-Harrisburg, Pa.) at 2:21 jolted the GBC offense as the Lightning proceeded to outscore its guest, 9-3, over the remaining time to earn the hard-fought conference win.
Turner Rush led all players with her 19 points on the night while Speaks registered a double-double effort consisting of 16 points and 11 boards. Not to be outdone,
Brittani Bryson (Sr.-Hampton, Va.) also authored a double-double (13 points,12 rebounds) to go along with four blocks and three steals.
Tweedy topped the Lions with 18 points, followed by
Carna Prokic with 13 points and six assists.
Destiny Thompson fell just short of a double-double performance with 11 points and nine rebounds in the effort.
The Lions return to the road this Sunday with a 1pm CACC contest at Dominican College.
