Georgian Court Women Nip Nyack, 69-67 ... Thompson Tops Team With Dynamite Double-Double Effort

Nyack, N.Y.- Courtesy of a dynamic double-double from Destiny Thompson, the Georgian Court University women's basketball squad snapped a four-game slide with a thrilling 69-67 triumph at Nyack College Saturday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action.

The junior exploded for 29 points and 12 boards in the much-needed win for the Lions, marking the first double-double of the year for Thompson, and the highest point total of the season by anyone on the GCU roster.

After a first half that saw Georgian Court slip into intermission with a slim 33-31 advantage, the Warriors responded with an 18-12 showing in third period to develop a 49-45 surplus heading into the fourth-and-final frame.

With Nyack ahead by a score of 51-49, back-to-back three pointers from Carna Prokic (7:47) and Jaelyn Tweedy (7:04) put GCU back in front at 55-51. The Warriors knotted the game at 55-all after Bryanna Brown (So.-Harlem, N.Y.) buried consecutive baskets for the home team. Thompson responded with a lay-in at 5:05 to snap the stalemate and provide the Lions a lead they would not let go of the rest of the way.

"I have never understood when people would say 'a win is a win', but that's exactly how I feel about this game," shared Georgian Court Head Coach Jazz Perazic. "We again turned the ball over too many times (28 total) but I am happy for our team. They fought and came through at the end by hitting some clutch free throws. It's always great to get a win on the road!"

Thompson, during her stellar performance, shot an outstanding 13-for-16 from the field. Tweedy settled for 16 points, including four three-pointers, to go along with a team-best six assists. Placher followed with 13 points of her own in 29 minutes.

Brown buried 20 points for Nyack (2-19, 2-10 CACC) in the defeat. Japria Karim-Duvall (Jr.Potomac, Md.) and Audrey Matteson (Sr.-Monticello, Ind.) provided 13 and 12 points, respectively, for the Warriors.

GCU remains on the road for its next outing, a 6:00 p.m. CACC contest this Tuesday at Jefferson.
