Philadelphia, Pa. - Coming off a thrilling 69-67 conference road win Saturday at Nyack College, the Georgian Court University women's basketball squad hoped to carry that momentum into Tuesday evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) divisional showdown at Jefferson.
Unfortunately, it was not meant to be as the Lady Rams, tied for first place (University of the Sciences) in the CACC's south division, rolled past the visiting Lions, 86-55, to improve to 19-2 (12-1 CACC). GCU drops to 4-16 (2-11) CACC after the setback.
The Lions started off strong in the first quarter as reigning CACCÂ Player of the Week,
Destiny Thompson, put through a lay-up to provide the road team an 8-4 lead 3:46 into the contest. Jefferson jump-started its offense from the point as the Rams raced on a 14-2 run to close out the frame.
Jefferson proceeded to jettison Georgian Court by building a healthy 42-21 advantage at intermission and growing its surplus to a game-high margin of 36 points (86-50) with 0:48 remaining in regulation.
Despite the lopsided score, GCU head coach,
Jazz Perazic, took away some positives from the game. "I saw a lot of good things, especially from our freshmen," shared Perazic. "Destiny also continued to play with great effort; I think she will surprise many people before this season is over."
Beverly Kum (Hagerstown, Md.) led the way for Jefferson in the scoring column as the junior poured in a team-best 16 points. Four other Rams deposited 12 points apiece in a balanced scoring attack for the victors.Â
As for the Lions, Thompson continued to demonstrate a hot shooting hand as the sophomore topped all players with 18 points, to go along with a team-best nine boards.
Nerea Brajac and
Carna Prokic followed with 11 points each for GCU.
Georgian Court now returns home Saturday for its annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration, highlighted a 1:00 p.m. conference contest vs. Post University.
